So as you can see we have a melting pot of cultures that is second to none!<br \/>\nEven if politically we are a part of Italy as a country, Sardinians feel like they are different, with unique traditions, food, hospitality, and beliefs.<br \/>\n<strong>Do<\/strong>: Refer to a Sardinian as a \u201cSardo\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t make silly hand gestures when pretending to talk Italian.<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8125 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Italy_hand_gesture-275x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Italy hand Gesture\" width=\"275\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Italy_hand_gesture-275x300.jpeg 275w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Italy_hand_gesture.jpeg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I see many people who try to pronounce a few words and while attempting to \u201cimpress\u201d a local, they do the hand gesture that involves touching your thumb with all the fingers of the hand. Nobody does that unless it\u2019s a specific situation (which I am going to explain another time). You will immediately be identified as the tourist who\u2019s \u201ctrying really hard\u201d.<br \/>\n<strong>Do<\/strong>: Act naturally and use conventional gestures as used in your country.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t refuse food or drinks.<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8127 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Cortes_Apertas-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"Sardinian_Sweets\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Cortes_Apertas-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Cortes_Apertas.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Generally, in Italy, turning away food is impolite, even if a person isn&#8217;t hungry. The same rules apply in Sardinia, where, especially in small towns it&#8217;s almost rude to refuse offered food or drinks from a local.<br \/>\n<strong>Do<\/strong>: Just accept it politely, 9 out of 10 times it will be delicious!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t pour drinks with the back of your hand<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8129 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/pouring_wine_correct-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"Pouring_wine_correct_way\" width=\"317\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/pouring_wine_correct-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/pouring_wine_correct.jpg 733w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" \/>Never pour a drink with the back of one&#8217;s hand facing the glass itself. In Sardinia, this is part of local superstition, and the locals believe that drinks should always be poured with the back of the hand facing (up) away from a glass. This comes from an ancient belief that if someone wanted to poison you, they would do it by putting a substance in their ring and pouring it in the glass when the hand was turned towards it.<br \/>\n<strong>Do<\/strong>: If you are in an awkward position and it\u2019s hard to reach the glass, just stand up and it will be easier to pour the \u201ccorrect way\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t always follow the speed limits.<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8131 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Driving_in_Sardinia-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"Driving_in_Sardinia\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Driving_in_Sardinia-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Driving_in_Sardinia.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Speed limits are sometimes exaggerated or misplaced, they haven\u2019t been updated since the 60s when cars had drum brakes and couldn\u2019t stop! I am not saying that you have to be Michael Schumacher, but since most of the roads are just two lanes, and the traffic is high, you will end up creating a caravan of slow-moving vehicles in the heat of the summer. Everyone will try to pass you creating additional dangerous situations.<br \/>\n<strong>Do<\/strong>: Use common sense and go with the flow.<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t pay for a coffee with a credit card.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8135 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Espresso_coffee-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Espresso_coffe_sardinia\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Espresso_coffee-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Espresso_coffee.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>Credit card or debit card fees are high in Italy. An Espresso is about 1,20\u20ac (as to this year 2023), cheap as dirt, and consider that if you order it you can sit at the bar\u2019s table for as long as you want, nobody will ask you to leave even if people are waiting to be seated. So give the business owner a break and don\u2019t make him have to pay extra commission to the bank.<br \/>\n<strong>Do<\/strong>: Always keep some cash in your wallet for minor things and everybody will smile at you!<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t be upset if you\u2019ll find closed shops from 1 pm to 4 pm (it\u2019s siesta time).<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8141 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Power_nap-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"Sardinian_Power_Nap\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Power_nap-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Power_nap.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yes, we love to take a power nap after lunch. Recent studies say that a small nap during the day reduces general fatigue, increases attention, improves performance and memory, boosts mood, and improves general heart health! It\u2019s no coincidence that Sardinia is one of the few Blue Zones on the planet.<br \/>\n<strong>Do<\/strong>: Plan ahead if you need to buy something in that timeframe of the day.<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t expect to have dinner at 6 am.<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8143 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Aperitivo_Sardegna-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Aperitivo_Sardinia\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Aperitivo_Sardegna-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Aperitivo_Sardegna.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In Sardinia we dine late, some times as late as 11 pm! This aspect probably comes from the Spanish culture, they are known to be late diners. Dining is not only a moment of nutrition but foremost a social event: there is a lot of talking and interacting with family, friends, colleagues, and sometimes meeting your next-table neighbors!<br \/>\nAlso, when we eat out, nobody will rush us to get to the \u201cbill\u201d. At 5 or 6 pm, most people are still at the beach, and the day is way too long to go to bed with an empty stomach.<br \/>\n<strong>Do<\/strong>: Go for an \u201cAperitivo\u201d at about 6:30 pm. It\u2019s a \u201cpre-dinner\u201d tradition where you have drinks and some snacks aside. This will help you reach 8 pm without having hunger pangs. Warning: you\u2019ll be tipsy by the time you sit at the restaurant!<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t put cheese on pasta with seafood.<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8146 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Seafood_Pasta-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"Seafood_Pasta\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Seafood_Pasta-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Seafood_Pasta.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Italians share a robust connection with food and possess clear-cut beliefs regarding acceptable and unacceptable practices. Engaging in certain behaviors with food is an absolute taboo in their culture.<br \/>\nThis is something you should never do, period.<br \/>\n<strong>Do<\/strong>: put some grated \u201cbottarga\u201d (traditional Sardinian dried fish eggs) on it, you\u2019ll thank me later.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t order a cappuccino after dinner.<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8148 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/No_Cappuccino-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/No_Cappuccino-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/No_Cappuccino-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/No_Cappuccino.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>An Italian would never order a cappuccino after noon, that\u2019s a big no-no. We only drink it in the morning.<br \/>\n<strong>Do<\/strong>: After lunch or dinner we usually order an espresso, which can be a \u201cmacchiato\u201d, this means the addition of a drop of whipped milk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t rely on public transportation.<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8150 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Hitchhiking_Sardinia-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"Hitchhiking_Sardinia\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Hitchhiking_Sardinia-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Hitchhiking_Sardinia.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Sardinia is a big and complicated island, its landscape changes dramatically from high mountains and forests to deserts, rocky terrains, hills, and hard-to-reach urban areas. Covering all towns and beaches or archaeological sites with busses or trains would be pretty much impossible. Also consider that several hotels\/B&amp;Bs that you could be staying in, may be located in the countryside.<br \/>\n<strong>Do<\/strong>: plan to rent a car, a scooter, or at least an e-bike.<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t think you can easily drive from one side of the island to the other as you would do elsewhere.<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8152 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Sardinian_Roads-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Sardinian_Roads\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Sardinian_Roads-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Sardinian_Roads.jpg 612w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The amount of nature on this island is amazing and fortunately, most of the land is not urbanized. Most roads are narrow and curvy, and that\u2019s what makes this island so unique and beautiful to explore. However, you may not be used to covering 200 km on a two lane-road, and this takes much more time than you think.<br \/>\n<strong>Do<\/strong>: Add an extra 30% driving time and depart in advance.<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t take away any sand, rocks or shells.<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8154 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Take_Plastic_Away-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"Beach_cleanup_Sardinia\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Take_Plastic_Away-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Take_Plastic_Away-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/sardiniaislandtours.com\/ws0101\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Take_Plastic_Away.jpeg 864w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>There has been a lot of debate in the past years about this topic as many tourists were found with little \u201csouvenirs\u201d in their suitcases when leaving the island. Most of our beaches are not formed by rivers carrying sand to the sea, but on the contrary, they are made of eroded rocks mixed with calcium carbonate, deposited by the degrading of the shells (this is why the sand is in some places extremely white) throughout millions of years. So unless you want every beach to be \u201cclosed to the public\u201d such as the Pink Beach, avoid filling your pockets with it!<br \/>\nDo: When on the beach, pick up all the plastic, and dump it in a trash can near you.
