Spargi, nestled off the northeastern coast of Sardinia, is a relatively small island spanning just 4.2 square kilometers. Despite its size, it boasts an unspoiled landscape that captivates visitors worldwide. As the third-largest island in the cluster, Spargi is renowned for its main bay, “Cala Corsara,” featuring three pristine white-sanded beaches and iconic rock formations like the “Witches Head,” the “Bulldog,” the “Rock of Italy” shaped like a “boot,” and the “Dutch Shoe.” While uninhabited, Spargi is easily accessible by boat from Palau, the main gateway to the archipelago, allowing tourists to embark on boat tours, excursions, or private charters to witness the island’s untouched beauty.

Natural Wonders

Spargi Island is a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering diverse landscapes showcasing its untouched allure. The coastline is adorned with striking pink, orange, and grey granite rocks sculpted by wind and sea over millions of years, creating an otherworldly setting. Some of the island’s beaches, such as Cala Granara, Cala Connari, and Cala Corsara, feature powdery white sands, and transparent waters, ideal for sunbathing and swimming.

Flora and Fauna

Despite its small size, Spargi Island hosts a rich variety of flora and fauna. Mediterranean vegetation covers the landscape, providing a stark contrast to the azure waters surrounding the island. Visitors may encounter aromatic herbs, wildflowers, and unique plant species thriving in the island’s pristine environment. Spargi also serves as a paradise for birdwatchers, with seagulls, cormorants, and hawks soaring above the cliffs, adding to the island’s natural charm. The presence of small watercourses, especially during the rainy season, offers visitors an unusual spectacle as small rivers flow down to the sea, breaking up the beaches.
To the northwest, the nearby islets of Spargiotto and Saprgiottello are protected by the Park Authority as important nesting areas for marine avifauna.

Beaches

Cala Corsara: Approachable from La Maddalena, this beach unfolds gradually on the South, offering a breathtaking spectacle with crystal-clear water contrasting against granite rocks. The “tafone,” a natural cavernous rock form, serves as a point of attraction with archaeological traces from the Nuragic Civilization and remnants from World War II.

Cala Granara: Located along the eastern coast, this spectacular beach boasts turquoise waters and a shallow, sandy seabed. Dunes and dense vegetation behind it envelop visitors in the fresh scents of the Mediterranean area.

Cala Connari: A unique pool surrounded by smooth rocks and Mediterranean vegetation, providing a secluded and tranquil environment for a refreshing dip. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts will be delighted by the vibrant underwater world surrounding Spargi.

Cala Soraya: Originally named Cala Ciaccaro, this paradise is characterized by a flourishing Mediterranean scrub, and it’s the only beach holding a huge visible sand dune. It was renamed following events involving the former Queen of Persia, Soraya Esfandiary.

Military Fortifications

Spargi Island features several abandoned military structures, including the Anti-war-ship post of Punta Zanotto and the anti-aircraft post of Batteria Petrajaccio. These well-designed structures, camouflaged with local granite, showcase historical remnants from various wars, providing a unique exploration experience for visitors.

Spargi Island stands out as one of our favorites, offering fresh water sources, pristine beaches, and over 153 meters of elevation with a fertile plateau. The island provides a haven for wildlife and sustains life with its abundance of vegetables and spices. The East side boasts beautiful beaches, while the West side features bizarre rock formations that will captivate visitors, ensuring an unforgettable experience on this hidden gem off the coast of Sardinia.
